A wooden beam across the shoulders can enable a small woman to carry four paintings on metal and porcelain. Her mobility allows her to speak persuasively to passersby about their virtues. And when she gets tired, the wooden beam acts as a stabilizing crossbeam in a sidewalk art shop. This clever, simple arrangement, known since ancient times in China, is totally new to me.
